Winter Weather Safety Tips

By Chief Michael Caron
January 27, 2022

A powerful winter storm is scheduled to impact our area this weekend and Riverhead Ambulance is prepared for the worst. Crews will be strategically positioned and ready to respond at a moments notice to a call for help.

We would like to remind the public that unnecessary travel should be limited to keep roadways clear thus allowing plows and emergency crews to clear the roads and respond to any emergency that should arise.

Winter Weather Safety Tips

-Wear layers of lightweight clothing to stay warm.

-Be extremely careful if you have to shovel snow. Take frequent breaks and stay hydrated.

-Watch for hypothermia and frostbite. Hypothermia symptoms include confusion, dizziness, exhaustion and severe shivering. Frostbite symptoms include numbness, flushed gray, white, blue or yellow skin discoloration, numbness, or waxy feeling skin.

-Don’t forget your pets – bring them indoors. If they can’t come inside, make sure they have enough shelter to keep them warm and that they can get to unfrozen water.

-Stay inside and off the roads.

-Prepare to go without power and heat.
